I am in one word, a composerarrangerpianist. But I just want to compose. People seem to forget that the most successful, legendary artists, are Non-performing composers, not performing ones. Yes, there are plenty of examples of both, but the longest legends have been Rodgers and Hammerstein, Burt Bacharach, Bernie Taupin, Carol Bayer Sager, Sammy Khan, Charlie Smalls, Rod Temperton(the spearheaded that composed the title track to the biggest selling album of all time -Thriller). So the fact that people seek composers who perform, at the expense of composers who don't, is baffling. Rod Temperton was also the engine of a seventies funk/pop supergroup, known as Heatwave. That band is still being played at nightclubs, and commenters on YouTube, can't get enough of "The Groove Line". Among the wisest of successful artists, knew to pick a non performing writer/composer, as an actual band member, Not only was Heatwave wise, in doing that, but so was Elton John. It's the bands looking for all do-it-yourselfers that are struggling, the most, because too many egos. Non performing writers know what it is, to do without, so they have no ego. Let's not forget the greatest non performing writer, Berry Gordy. A whole label thrived because of him. Can't quite think of the name of the label... let's see....
Anyways, :) This online thing should make it easier, for a non performing writer composer, but we'll see. Do you need any more convincing? I wonder what was the magic that Elton John had in him, to see enough to make such a wise choice, without letting the feeling of the unknown, get to him? We'll see if there's more magic out there. Remember, composers are forced to dig deep to find the prettiest catchiest melodies, because that's all they have. They usually can't perform, themselves. And God doesn't give junk, even if you or I don't like the configuration of it. It's not like you aren't struggling if it's a band full of DIYers, either, so what have you got to lose?
Strength of loyalty is important in making a band work, because the journey will be a struggle. If you're not passionate enough to overcome it, then you don't really want to be a musician, and therefore, you're not one. A bunch of no's shouldn't stop you
What's wrong with a band that consists of a keyboardist, guitarist, drummer, singer, with a couple of them being writers, or not, and, a composer? Nothing. Except, it's rare. And those few bands configured, as such, are all successful.
By the way, I'm a g to PG rated composer. If you want a nsfw composer, you could have one or more of your performing writers be that. So, here's me, a composer, looking for bandmates. Thanks for reading.
